Repositioning for Career Progression

This year at Black Tech Fest 2025, we took to the stage, for the 3rd time with a packed audience, delivering our session “RePositioning for Impact: A Recruiter’s Lens on Career Progression.”

Led by our founder Arsema Fessehazion, and joined by Dominic Smith (DigitalOcean) and Ben Vanlint (Treatwell), we explored how professionals, especially Black talent in tech, can take control of their career journey in a fast-changing industry.

But this wasn’t just another career talk. It was real, honest conversation about growth, visibility, and leadership, and what it takes to move from doing the work to making an impact.

Here are a few lessons that really stood out for us 💎

💡 1. Mid-Level to Senior Isn’t About Time - It’s About Transformation

It’s not just years of experience that define progression. Recruiters look for curiosity, adaptability, and leadership potential.
As Dominic said, “We hire for potential - the soft skills that make someone teachable, collaborative, and ready to grow.”

👀 2. Visibility Is Your Superpower

Your CV might open the door, but your visibility gets you noticed.
Ben reminded us that building a personal brand on LinkedIn, joining communities, and showing your work outside the day job can make a huge difference.
And internally, don’t wait to be seen - raise your hand, volunteer, and seek sponsors who can advocate for you when you’re not in the room.

🌱 3. Shift from Success to Significance

This one hit home for the whole team. Success is what you do for yourself; significance is the impact you have on others.
As Ben put it beautifully, “You can measure success in numbers - but significance shows up in people.”

🗣️ 4. Tell Your Story - Authentically

Storytelling isn’t just for interviews. It’s a skill that helps you communicate your value and purpose.
Show the “why” behind your achievements, not just the “what.” Metrics matter - but authenticity lands deeper.

🤝 5. Relationships Build Careers, Not Just Jobs

Recruiters aren’t gatekeepers; we’re partners. The best candidate relationships grow from genuine curiosity, shared goals, and trust.
As Dominic reminded us, “When you show up as yourself, you stay memorable long after the interview.”

This session reminded us why Black Recruiters Network exists - to help our community thrive, not just survive in the spaces we occupy.
Because repositioning for impact isn’t just about moving up - it’s about showing up differently, knowing your worth, and using your seat to make space for others.
